In early November, 2021, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) released two guides to assist families and friend of people living in nursing homes and assisted living communities who may be subject to elder financial abuse. The first guide, Preventing Elder Financial Abuse, is a 32 page document that covers a variety of topics, such as:
How to prevent elder financial abuse;
How to recognize elder financial abuse;
How to record elder financial abuse;
How to report elder financial abuse; and
Resources for individuals and families.
The second document, Reporting Elder Financial Abuse, is a quick reference guide for how families and friend of people living in nursing homes and assisted living communities can report elder financial abuse to authorities. This 4 page document answers a variety of questions, such as:
What is financial abuse?
Where should I report financial abuse?
What information do I need to file a report?
What other types of help are available?
What legal options might we have?
